What is Stick Drift?

Stick drift occurs when your PS5 controller's analog stick registers movement even when you're not touching it. This causes your character or cursor to move on its own, making games unplayable.

Common Symptoms:

  • Character moves without input
  • Camera drifts in one direction
  • Menu selections move automatically
  • Difficulty aiming in shooters

🔍 Diagnostic Steps

1

Test with Online Tool

Go to controllertest.org and connect your PS5 controller. Watch the analog stick visualizer without touching the sticks.

2

Check for Physical Damage

Inspect the analog stick for visible debris, damage, or loose components.

3

Try Software Fixes First

Update controller firmware via PS5 settings. Try resetting the controller using the reset button on the back.

🛠️ Repair Methods (Easy to Hard)

Method 1: Cleaning (Easy)

Easy

Success Rate: 30-40% | Time: 10 minutes | Tools: Compressed air, isopropyl alcohol

Steps:

  1. Power off your controller completely
  2. Use compressed air around the base of the analog stick (360 degrees)
  3. Apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (90%+) under the stick rubber
  4. Rotate the stick in full circles 20-30 times
  5. Let dry for 5 minutes, then test again

Method 2: Recalibration (Medium)

Medium

Success Rate: 20-30% | Time: 5 minutes | Tools: None

Steps:

  1. On PS5: Settings → Accessories → Controllers → Wireless Controller Device Software
  2. Check for firmware updates and install if available
  3. Reset controller: Use paperclip on reset button (back of controller, small hole near L2)
  4. Re-pair controller with PS5 via USB-C cable
  5. Test your controller to verify drift is gone

Method 3: Module Replacement (Hard)

Hard

Success Rate: 95%+ | Time: 30-60 minutes | Tools: Screwdrivers, soldering iron, replacement module

⚠️ Warning: This requires opening your controller and soldering. Only attempt if you have experience. This will likely void your warranty.

Required Tools:

  • Phillips #00 screwdriver
  • Plastic opening tools
  • Soldering iron (350°C recommended)
  • Solder wick or desoldering pump
  • Replacement analog stick module (Alps RKJXV122400R)
  • Flux and fresh solder

Steps:

  1. Remove 4 screws from the back of the controller
  2. Carefully remove the back shell
  3. Disconnect the battery (safety first!)
  4. Remove the motherboard by unscrewing 5 screws
  5. Locate the faulty analog stick module on the motherboard
  6. Use soldering iron to heat and remove old solder from the stick's pins
  7. Carefully lift out the old module
  8. Clean the PCB pads with isopropyl alcohol
  9. Position new module, ensuring all pins align correctly
  10. Solder each pin carefully (6 pins total)
  11. Reassemble controller in reverse order
  12. Test your controller before final assembly
